An emergency shower is one of those bits of kit nobody thinks about until they need it. Then, with a splash of caustic down their front, they want two things: plenty of clean water, and no surprises. A shower that coughs out a dribble of rusty brown water is not the surprise anyone is after.

That is why RPS Fire now tests emergency eye wash stations and safety showers to the new

           AS 4775:2026

standard. We have the calibrated test equipment and qualified people to check that your units actually do their job, and the paperwork to prove it.

           What is AS 4775:2026?

AS 4775 is the Australian Standard for emergency showers, eye wash and eye/face wash equipment. It sets out how the equipment should perform, where it should be installed, and how it should be maintained and tested.

The previous version, AS 4775-2007, had been in place for nearly 19 years. It was replaced in June 2026 by AS 4775:2026, now titled Emergency shower, eyewash and eye/face wash equipment and drench hoses. Changes flagged during the public consultation included guidance on sizing for users with a disability, the materials used in plumbing components, and the design and manufacture of metal and plastic parts.

In plain terms: the rules got a long-overdue update, and the testing needs to match. If your last report still quotes the 2007 standard, it is worth having a fresh look.

Does your workplace need emergency eye wash or shower equipment?

If your people handle chemicals that can burn, irritate or damage eyes and skin, the answer is very likely yes. Under Queensland work health and safety law, businesses must manage the risks from hazardous chemicals, and emergency showers and eye wash stations are one of the most common controls. Around Central Queensland we see them at:

            Battery charging areas

            Laboratories, schools and hospitals

            Food processing and meatworks

Your safety data sheets are a good place to start. If they say "flush eyes with water for at least 15 minutes", you need something better than the tap in the lunch room.

What does an RPS Fire eye wash and shower test involve?

We don’t just pull the handle, watch it splash and tick a box. Every unit is tested and measured against AS 4775:2026.

Eye wash and eye/face wash units

We use a calibrated eyewash gauge to check the spray pattern. The water needs to cover both eyes at the same time, at the right height and width, with a gentle flow. Too weak and it won’t flush the eyes properly. Too strong and it can do more harm than good. We also check the dust covers, the push or pull activation, and that the valve stays open on its own so the user has both hands free to hold their eyes open.

           Safety showers

For showers, we use a flow test sock that directs the full flow into a calibrated test bin. We time it on the spot to measure the actual flow rate in litres per minute. That beats "she looks about right" every time, and it means no one on your site gets drenched (except sometimes our technician).

           Everything else that matters

            Water temperature.

The standard calls for tepid water. In a Central Queensland summer, a supply pipe running across a tin roof can deliver water hot enough to cook prawns. We check it.

            Activation.

Valves must open quickly and stay open without the user holding them.

            Location and access.

The unit needs to be easy to reach, with a clear path. A pallet of drums parked in front of the shower is a fail.

            Signage, lighting and drainage.

People need to find it fast, see it at night, and not slip over once it is running.

            Condition.

Corrosion, blocked heads, leaks, damaged pull rods and missing parts.

            Records.

Each unit is tagged, and you receive a written report listing results and any defects.

How often should eye wash stations and safety showers be tested?

For plumbed units, weekly activation by your own staff has long been the rule. It flushes out stale water and confirms water actually reaches the head. Keep a simple log; it takes 30 seconds and saves a lot of explaining after an incident.

On top of that, a full inspection and flow test against the standard should be carried out at least once a year by a competent person. That is the part we take off your hands.

           Common faults we find

After years of testing, the same problems pop up again and again:

Low flow from partly closed isolation valves or blocked shower heads

Eye wash streams that hit the forehead instead of the eyes

Hot water from exposed pipework, especially in summer

            Missing or broken dust caps

Access blocked by stock, bins or equipment

            Faded or missing signage

            No record of weekly activation

Most of these are cheap and quick to fix. Finding them during a test is far better than finding them during an emergency.

Do I have to replace my equipment because of the new standard?

Not necessarily. Plenty of existing units will still perform well. We test what you have, tell you how it measures up against AS 4775:2026, and recommend work only where it is actually needed.

Can my staff do the testing themselves?

Your staff should carry out the weekly activation. The annual flow test and inspection needs calibrated equipment and someone who knows the standard, which is where we come in.

Annual Occupier's Statement in Queensland: What Central Queensland Building Owners Need to Know

Who signs Queensland's Annual Occupier's Statement, when it's due, what records you need, and how RPS Fire got a client inspection-ready in 4 weeks.

Nobody enjoys opening a notice of inspection from the Queensland Fire Department. It sits somewhere between a tax audit and a flat tyre on the Bruce Highway. A large Rockhampton service company got one recently, and further down we'll show you how we got them ready.

Most of the time, though, the paperwork that gets people into trouble is simpler: the Annual Occupier's Statement. If your building has fire safety equipment, someone has to sign it every 12 months. Here's what it is, who signs it, when it's due, and how to get it right first time.

What is an Annual Occupier's Statement?

It's a yearly declaration to the Commissioner of the Queensland Fire Department (QFD) confirming that every prescribed fire safety installation in your building has been properly maintained over the past 12 months. That covers things like extinguishers, hose reels, hydrants, sprinklers, fire alarms, exit signs, emergency lighting and fire doors.

The rules are in section 55A of the

           Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008

and Queensland Development Code (QDC) MP 6.1. The form itself is Schedule 2 of MP 6.1. It lists each installation, the standard it's maintained to (usually AS 1851, or AS/NZS 2293.2 for emergency lighting), whether any critical defect notices were issued during the year, and when they were fixed.

Does it apply to your building?

If you run a commercial, industrial, retail, accommodation or multi-unit residential building with fire safety equipment, almost certainly yes. There are two main exceptions:

Houses (class 1a) and their sheds and garages aren't covered.

Buildings treated as part of a coal mine or mine under Queensland's mining safety laws are excluded from MP 6.1's maintenance rules. They're managed under mining legislation instead.

That second one matters in the Bowen Basin. A building on the mine lease may sit under mining law, but your office, workshop or depot in Emerald, Moura or Blackwater almost certainly doesn't. If you're not sure, ask us before you assume you're exempt. "I thought it didn't apply" isn't a great conversation to have with an inspector.

Who is responsible, and who can sign?

The occupier is responsible. Under the Fire Services Act 1990 that's the owner, the tenant, the person in charge of the premises, or anyone managing it or running a business from it. In practice:

Tenant: responsible for the installations it maintains under its lease. In multi-tenant buildings, the owner or body corporate usually looks after shared systems like hydrants, sprinklers and the fire panel. Check your lease so nothing falls through the gaps.

            Owner-occupied: the owner.

            Vacant building: the owner.

Body corporate: the committee decides who is authorised to sign for it.

The statement can be signed by the occupier or by someone they authorise, such as a director, manager, committee member or their appointed Fire Safety Adviser. Your fire contractor can do the legwork. Just remember that authorising someone else to sign doesn't hand over the legal responsibility. That stays with the occupier.

When is it due, and where do you send it?

There's no single statewide date. Your first statement is due within one year of moving in, and each one after that within one year of the last. From the due date you have 10 business days to send a copy to the QFD Commissioner, by email to

           occupier.statements@fire.qld.gov.au

or through your regional QFD office. Keep a copy with your maintenance records for at least two years.

Not sure of your date? Check your last statement. If you've just taken over a building, the previous occupier must hand over the fire safety records within one month of leaving, so chase them up. If you can't find any statement at all, treat it as overdue and start now.

What records do you need before you sign?

The statement is only as good as the records behind it. Before you sign, make sure you have:

Service records for the full year, each showing the installation, the technician's name and licence number, the date, what was done, the results and any repairs

Form 72 (periodic testing and maintenance) for hydrants and sprinklers, which your contractor must give you within 10 business days of the work

Every critical defect notice from the year, with proof it was fixed, such as a rectification report or invoice

You also need a copy of your records kept in the building and another somewhere secure off site. An electronic copy is fine as long as you can get to it easily. If a record is missing, you can't honestly declare that installation was maintained.

Every RPS Fire client gets access to our online client portal, built on Uptick, the fire protection software used by hundreds of fire companies across Australia and New Zealand. Instead of digging through a filing cabinet, an inbox or the glovebox of the ute, everything you need before signing your statement is in one place, any time:

A year-at-a-glance view of your routine servicing, showing what's been completed, what's coming up, and anything done late or still overdue

A defect register showing every open and resolved defect, sorted into critical, non-critical and non-conformance, so you can see straight away whether anything is stopping you from signing

Defect quotes you can review and approve online, which helps you get repairs done inside the one-month window

Your service reports and documents, ready to view or download, plus monthly maintenance reports

For clients with several sites, a map of all your properties, colour-coded by the most serious open defect at each one

Because your records are stored securely online and easy to get to, the portal also covers the requirement to keep a copy of your fire safety records somewhere other than the building. If QFD walks in, you can pull up a full year of records in minutes.

Can you lodge with unresolved critical defects?

No. Fix them first. A critical defect is one likely to stop an installation working and put people at serious risk in a fire, like a failed hydrant pump or a fire alarm system that's down. One faulty extinguisher among several usually isn't one. Your technician must give you a critical defect notice within 24 hours of finding it.

The statement asks for the date each critical defect was fixed, with the notices and proof of repair attached. Signing while one is still open means declaring something that isn't true.

Other repairs found during maintenance must be done within one month, unless you have a reasonable excuse. The regulation's own examples are a remote site no qualified person could get to, and complex work or waiting on parts. Both happen in Central Queensland, so if they apply to you, write down the reason and talk to us well before your due date.

What happens if you get it wrong?

Failing to prepare, keep or lodge the statement carries a maximum penalty of 20 penalty units each, currently $3,454. The maintenance failures that usually sit behind a missing statement carry up to 30 penalty units ($5,181). QFD officers can audit buildings and issue on-the-spot fines.

The bigger risk is under the Fire Services Act 1990, which requires occupiers to keep all prescribed fire safety installations maintained at all times. The penalty is up to 100 penalty units ($17,270) for a standard breach, rising to 2,000 penalty units or three years' jail if a failure contributes to multiple deaths. Company executives can also be held personally liable.

And after a fire, your insurer will ask for your maintenance records. Gaps can make a claim much harder.

A large Rockhampton-based service company came to us after being served a QFD notice of inspection. The occupier's statement was only part of it. An inspection looks at the whole picture: staff training, fire wardens, evacuation practice and the maintenance records behind every installation.

5-yearly AS 1851 hydrant and sprinkler testing for commercial properties across Central Queensland. Book your inspection with RPS Fire today.

Not sure when your systems are next due for 5-year testing? Contact RPS Fire on 07 4939 5597 or admin@rpsfire.com.au — servicing Barcaldine, Biloela, Blackall, Blackwater, Emerald, Gladstone, Longreach, Monto, Moura, Rockhampton and Yeppoon.">

Because annual testing confirms a system is working today. The 5-year test goes deeper — it's designed to catch what only shows up over time: corrosion inside pipework, mechanical wear on valves and moving parts, and degradation caused by the site's own environment. A hydrant that passed its flow test every year can still have internal corrosion an annual check wouldn't reveal — which is exactly what the 5-yearly hydrostatic test is built to find.

<a href="mailto:Why the 5-Year Test Is Different from an Annual Check
Most fire protection systems are checked far more often than once every 5 years — hydrants get an annual flow test, sprinklers get an annual functional test. So why does AS1851 also require a separate 5-yearly test on top of that?

A hydrant that passed its flow test every year can still have internal corrosion an annual check wouldn't reveal — which is exactly what the 5-yearly hydrostatic test is built to find.
Under AS1851, this applies across a building's water-based fire systems — hydrants and sprinklers each have their own 5-year requirement. For a full breakdown of exactly what's tested and what's included, see our Fire Safety FAQs.
Why This Needs a Multi-Disciplined Team
A 5-year inspection touches pipework, valves, pumps and structural fittings across several systems at once — not one trade's worth of work. RPS Fire is a licensed fire protection provider (QBCC Licence No. 1245534) with multi-disciplined tradesmen on the team, including licensed plumbers and QBCC-licensed sprinkler fitters, alongside fire protection technicians. That mix means hydrants and sprinkler systems can be assessed properly by the trades qualified for each component — in a single, coordinated visit rather than juggling separate contractors for separate systems.
What You Get at the End
A 5-year inspection produces documented certification, not just a verbal opinion — Form 72 for hydrant and sprinkler systems, along with a written report and recommendations on anything showing wear, corrosion or reduced performance.

Booking Your 5-Year Compliance Inspection
If your hydrant or sprinkler systems were last comprehensively tested five years ago — or you're not sure when they were — it's worth checking before it becomes an issue at your next audit. RPS Fire has worked across Central Queensland since 2012, handling installation, maintenance, certification and now 5-yearly deep testing under one licensed, multi-disciplined team.

What Are the Best Fire Safety Training Options for Staff?

Explore workplace fire safety training, evacuation instruction and Fire Safety Adviser services with RPS Fire, serving Central Queensland businesses.

The right training depends on the role: general evacuation instruction for all staff, and formal Emergency Control Instruction for anyone on your Emergency Control Organisation. Equipment alone doesn't prepare people — staff also need to understand the procedures that apply to them and how to respond when an emergency occurs.

RPS Fire provides tailored workplace fire safety training, Fire Safety Adviser services and first response training, so training can be considered alongside the workplace's broader fire safety arrangements rather than as a standalone exercise.

Start With Training That Matches Your Workplace

A small office and a large industrial site don't have the same fire safety requirements, so training shouldn't follow a one-size-fits-all approach. Before organising anything, it's worth considering the workplace layout, evacuation arrangements, the fire systems already installed — including hydrants, fire hose reels, sprinklers and alarms — and the responsibilities assigned to staff.

RPS Fire's training is tailored accordingly, with sessions focused on practical knowledge and helping staff respond confidently and effectively during an emergency.

General Evacuation and First Response Instruction

Evacuation and first response instruction is an important area for Queensland workplaces. RPS Fire provides General Evacuation First Response Instruction (GEFRI) and first response training through its Fire Safety Adviser package, which also includes emergency evacuation diagrams, evacuation procedures and fire safety reports.

Bringing these elements together connects staff instruction with the procedures and documentation used at the workplace, rather than leaving training disconnected from what happens on the day.

Fire Warden Training and Your Emergency Control Organisation

Not every staff member needs the same level of training. GEFRI is intended for all occupants, but Fire Warden Training — formal Emergency Control Instruction (ECI) — is specifically for members of a workplace's Emergency Control Organisation (ECO). GEFRI can sometimes be delivered internally where an employer can demonstrate staff have been adequately instructed, but ECO members require formal instruction suited to their role.

Whether a workplace needs an ECO depends on factors including the building's size, its occupancy, the risks present, and the complexity of evacuating it. Where one is required, the number of wardens needed depends on the number of occupants, the number of floors, the building layout, and operational risks — there's no single figure that applies to every site.

Fire Wardens are typically responsible for:

            Sweeping designated areas

            Directing occupants

            Assisting mobility-impaired persons

            Ensuring areas are clear

            Reporting to the Chief Warden

           The Chief Warden's role covers:

            Coordinating the overall emergency response

            Liaising with emergency services

            Making evacuation decisions

            Controlling communications during an emergency

RPS Fire provides Fire Warden Training tailored to these roles, ensuring your ECO is prepared to carry out its responsibilities effectively.

           Combine Training with Evacuation Planning

Training becomes more useful when staff can relate what they've learned to the procedures that apply at their own workplace. RPS Fire's Fire Safety Adviser service, overseen by Graham Read (FSA 1452678-9500915), includes emergency evacuation diagrams, evacuation procedures, fire safety reports and first response training — giving businesses a way to consider staff preparedness alongside their documented emergency arrangements.

           Why Does Practical Knowledge Matter?

Reading a procedure is different from being prepared to act during an emergency. RPS Fire's training emphasises hands-on experience and practical knowledge, designed to help staff understand how to respond confidently if an emergency occurs.

This reflects RPS Fire's wider approach to fire safety. Its licensed team — RPS Fire holds QBCC Licence No. 1245534, and every employee carrying out this work holds the appropriate licence for the job — installs, maintains and certifies systems including hydrants, fire hose reels, sprinklers, pumps, suppression systems and portable fire equipment, all maintained to

How Do You Choose a Fire Safety Training Provider?

When assessing training options, it's worth looking beyond a generic package. Consider whether the provider understands the systems installed at your workplace, and whether they can connect training with your evacuation procedures and wider fire safety arrangements.

           Conclusion

The best workplace fire safety training is relevant to the people, procedures and fire protection measures at the individual site. RPS Fire offers tailored practical training and first response instruction alongside Fire Safety Adviser services and fire system expertise. Businesses should speak with the team about their workplace, staff and existing systems to establish the most appropriate training option.

Most commercial buildings need a combination of systems working together, not a single product — typically extinguishers, hydrants and fire hose reels, sprinklers, alarms, emergency lighting and passive protection, all serviced to AS 1851, the Australian Standard for fire protection servicing.

The right combination depends on the building and what it's used for. RPS Fire completes, installation, commissioning, servicing, maintenance and certification for businesses throughout Central Queensland. At a glance, the main systems worth considering are:

Portable equipment should be treated as one part of a broader fire safety strategy, not a stand-in for it. What matters longer term is the quality of the equipment, how well it's positioned for the building, and whether it's kept in serviceable condition — which is why ongoing maintenance and clear reporting matter as much as the initial purchase. Under AS1851, extinguishers require a 6-monthly inspection and tag, with pressure testing every 5 years — reduced to every 3 years in aggressive or corrosive environments.

Do Hydrants and Fire Hose Reels Need Separate Servicing?

Yes. For properties with a wet fire system, hydrants and fire hose reels can be a significant part of the building's fire protection infrastructure, and RPS Fire designs, installs and services both — but treats each as its own item. A hydrant system being present doesn't mean hose reels are automatically covered, and vice versa.

Capabilities here also extend to fire pump and tank installations and specialised flow-testing equipment. Hydrant and sprinkler systems are certified under a Form 71 when commissioned and Form 72 for periodic testing and maintenance, the standard Queensland certification for water-based fire safety installations. Under AS1851, hydrants need a 6-monthly visual and condition check, an annual flow test, and 5-yearly booster flow and hydrostatic testing; fire hose reels need a 6-monthly visual inspection, an annual flow test.

Automatic sprinkler systems add another layer of protection, and RPS Fire provides sprinkler installation and maintenance as part of its broader wet fire services. Design and construction packages are scoped to the project, so sprinkler protection is planned in as part of the building's infrastructure rather than added as an afterthought.

New hydrant and sprinkler systems are commissioned on Form 71, and ongoing testing and maintenance is recorded on Form 72 — the Queensland forms required under QDC MP 6.1 for water-based fire safety installations — giving you documented proof that these specific systems meet requirements. Under AS1851, sprinkler systems need monthly valve and gauge checks, 6-monthly valve assessments, an annual full functional test, a 5-yearly comprehensive assessment, and 25-yearly sprinkler head sampling.

Early warning is another essential part of a fire safety system. RPS Fire installs and maintains fire detection and alarm systems, which work alongside extinguishers, sprinklers, hydrants and hose reels, and emergency planning as part of a coordinated approach to workplace fire safety. Under AS1851, these systems need monthly panel checks, 6-monthly circuit and alarm testing, an annual full functional test, and a 5-yearly battery and cable inspection.

Fire protection also has to get people get out safely. RPS Fire assists with exit and emergency lighting, evacuation plans and procedures, and evacuation diagram reviews to confirm they're current and correctly displayed. Under AS2293, exit and emergency lighting needs a 6-monthly discharge test, confirming battery backup lasts the full rated duration (typically 90 minutes).

RPS Fire's Fire Safety Adviser service includes emergency evacuation diagrams, evacuation procedures, fire safety reports and first response training — connecting the physical equipment installed in a building with the knowledge staff need to use it in an emergency.

           What Is Passive Fire Protection?

Not every fire protection measure is active equipment. Passive fire protection includes building elements like fire doors, which RPS Fire installs and maintains as part of its service range — elements that should be reviewed alongside active systems like alarms and sprinklers, not considered separately from them. Under AS1851, fire doors need a 6-monthly visual inspection and close test.

           Why Does Ongoing Maintenance Matter?

Investing in fire protection doesn't end once equipment is installed. Under AS1851, systems need to be inspected, tested and serviced on an ongoing basis to stay compliant and to keep performing when needed.

RPS Fire is a licensed fire protection provider (QBCC Licence No. 1245534) and has worked across Central Queensland since 2012. Licensing isn't limited to the business — All work is carried out or supervised by appropriately QBCC-licensed technicians. For businesses managing several systems — extinguishers, hydrants, hose reels, sprinklers, alarms and passive protection — working with one accountable, fully licensed team can make ongoing compliance considerably more straightforward.

There's no single product that replaces a properly planned fire protection system. Most commercial buildings rely on some combination of extinguishers, hydrants, hose reels, sprinklers, alarms, emergency lighting, passive protection and evacuation procedures.

The important step is working out what's appropriate for your property, and then keeping it maintained to AS1851 over time — not treating installation as a one-off task.

How to Schedule a Fire Safety Audit for Your Commercial Building

Book a fire safety audit with RPS Fire. We check sprinklers, hydrants, hose reels, extinguishers, passive fire and evacuation diagrams in Central Queensland.

Scheduling a fire safety audit starts with contacting a licensed provider who reviews your building's installed systems, tests them against AS 1851 — the Australian Standard governing fire protection servicing — and reports on where you stand.

For businesses across Central Queensland, that audit is the starting point for compliance. It gives you a clear, picture of what's installed, what condition it's in, and whether it meets your obligations, before a problem shows up during an emergency or an inspection.

What Does a Fire Safety Audit Cover?

A proper audit looks at the building's fire protection arrangements, not just one piece of equipment in isolation. Depending on the property, that typically includes:

Fire hydrants and fire hose reels

            Automatic sprinkler systems

            Fire extinguishers and fire blankets

            Fire detection and alarm systems

            Exit and emergency lighting

Passive fire protection and fire doors

            Fire pumps and tanks

Evacuation diagrams and procedures, checked for currency, correct display, and accuracy against the building's layout

Before the audit, it helps to have any existing service records, building plans or previous reports on hand — this gives the assessor useful context and can speed up the process.

What Will You Receive After the Audit?

A proper audit produces more than a verbal opinion. You can expect:

A written report setting out what was found

Clear recommendations on anything that needs attention

Certification specific to hydrant or sprinkler systems where applicable, such as a Form 72.

Why Does Fire Safety Need Ongoing Maintenance?

An audit is a snapshot — it tells you where things stand today. Staying compliant to AS1851 means keeping up that inspection and maintenance cycle over time, not treating the audit as a one-off task. Frequencies vary by system — fire doors, for example, need a 6-monthly check, while hydrants are flow-tested annually with 5-yearly hydrostatic testing.

RPS Fire takes a proactive approach: installation, maintenance, certification, inspections and training, all handled by one licensed Central Queensland team, so your fire protection systems stay operational and aligned with the standards that apply to them.

General Evacuation First Response Instruction (GEFRI)

What is GEFRI and do your staff need it? RPS Fire delivers General Evacuation and First Response Instruction for Central Queensland workplaces.

Under the Building Fire Safety Regulations 2008, all staff must receive General Evacuation First Response Instruction (GEFRI) within two days of starting work and refreshed annually. This essential training ensures every worker knows how to raise the alarm, contact emergency services, locate exits and identify assembly areas – giving them the confidence to act quickly and safely.

At RPS Fire, we understand that every facility operates differently. That’s why we tailor our GEFRI training to reflect your workplace’s specific layout, procedures and risk profile. Our experienced fire safety technicians don’t just tick compliance boxes – they create an interactive learning experience that helps your team feel empowered and prepared. We ensure your organisation meets all legal requirements while promoting a genuine culture of safety.
